Its not just about that, its something a lot deeper: it is about making the guys mentally tougher while duelling 1-on-1. You saw how easily everyone fell during Antonio's 1-on-1 duels and they called foul for everything. Football, back in the first version of this anime, like in the rest of the world, used to be less stuck-up in rules for clean games and more about guts and dominating the opponent during games. Antonio was not causing faults per se, but actually 'winning' against everyone during their confrontations for the ball on the field.

I actually side with Antonio and coach on this one: football became too soft these days and produces only players who can make cute fancy passes and dribbles. It is not very spirited and exciting as having the dudes battle it out for the ball, like in the days when AC Milan were champions. They had a rough playstyle, but very interesting to watch and see! In these days now, you call a foul even if someone accidentally bumps into you without the player even falling, such pussies! :(

The press, heck even coatch and their teams were against such behavior

To tell the truth...in one part of Europe (England) what he was doing weren't fauls...that's why while I love european football a lot I HATE the way Britain plays: way too forecefull, brutal and they walk on very thin line between what is allowed and fauls. I'm surprised it's the way he plays it since in Italy they use more tactic, srategy, true fireness as well but NOT BRUTALITY. I know only one Italian footbalplayer who heldto t-shirts of opposite team..and the press, the fans heck even his team dissaproved of that kind of behaviour. They love clean game. That's why he takes it way too far. The rest things when people asked Kamiya if that was a faul and he said 'no' he was right: it's allowed to block the ball this way or take it that way BUT ONLY IF THE BALL is what you are aiming/going for. Te faul starts when you aim at leg and believe me, it's easy to see.
